Quoting Spongebob, Sam said today: "It's a great day for chores!"
He boisterously listed off seven chores he had decided to do. He would wash windows, clean the mirrors, Swiffer the floor, clean of the kitchen table, wipe down the chairs, and a couple of other things I don't believe he quite got to.
The kitchen table and chairs were attacked by Sam and his team of bleach wipes. The floor was (somewhat) Swiffered. And the bathroom mirror is, well, sparkling after I cleaned it with Windex. Word to the wise: If your four-year old has a bleach wipe and he goes off to clean the bathroom mirror, stop him.
It was a great day for chores, indeed. And I can't imagine there are many days in my future when Sam will spout out that Spongebob quotation again. There are moments when I wish he would be four-years old forever and ever. He is comic relief, innocent joy, and a lesson in God's grace...not every moment, but many of them.
And as long as I'm wishing for an impossible Ponce De Leon waterwork, I'll wish Karis could be two-months old forever and ever. So far, sheltered from every major heartache and headache that will eventually find her. I can hold onto her tightly, whispering in her ear, "I love you." "You are beautiful." "You belong to God." And maybe if I can whisper those unconditional words enough times, they will outnumber all of the other words she will hear as she grows older. Conditional words from peers, from the media. "You will be loved if you..." "You will be beautiful if you buy this, do that, wear this..." "You will belong if you try this, go there, believe that..."
Words of all kinds...Water of all kinds. Those are the two things that make for a good baptism. The right Word and a bowl of water. It's the one Word that overpowers all of the other words that will make their way into my little girl's ears. A Word of belonging, unconditionally, to the one who gifts us with something better than what Ponce was after.
